Staff Picks (past events)Repertory Series Archive(Some of) The Best of 2019

2018 • dir Christian Petzold w/Franz Rogowski, Paula Beer, Godehard Giese • 101 min • DCP

This unsettling thriller transposes Anna Seghers’s 1944 novel of life on the run in Nazi occupied France to the present day with startling results. A man (Rogowski) assumes the identity of a dead writer and flees the fascists occupying Paris. Arriving in Marseilles, he hopes to escape the country, but his efforts become complicated by the others that he meets there. The film concludes with one of the most devastating needle-drop music-cues in recent memory.
