Pain and Glory

Double Feature with VARDA BY AGNÈS (6:30)

2019 • dir Pedro Almodóvar w/Antonio Banderas, Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Navas, Penélope Cruz • 113 min • DCP

The latest from the great Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, PAIN AND GLORY follows a renowned filmmaker (Banderas) in decline – both physically and professionally – who confronts his past and, ultimately, rediscovers his ability to create. A remarkable work of meta-fiction/autobiography, PAIN AND GLORY echoes the soul-searching work of Federico Fellini in its unflinching exploration of the filmmaker’s own psychology.

“Almodóvar shows us that, even after nearly two dozen features over several decades, he can still hold an audience in his hand – and surprise it.”
– Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times

“‘Pain and Glory,’ all about healing rifts and rejoining life, is personal and universal. It’s also simple in a way that’s incandescent – suffused by a strange and beautiful gentleness of spirit.”
– Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

“‘Pain and Glory’ can be achingly sad, but its pleasures, rainbow hues and humor keep it (and you) aloft.”
– Manohla Dargis, New York Times
