Repertory Series ArchiveVarda Rarities

Double Feature with DAGUERRÉOTYPES (5:00, 9:00)

2004 • dir Agnès Varda • 96 min • DCP

This triptych of Varda’s short films explores the power and vitality of the photograph. In Ulysses (1982), she reunites with the subjects of a mysterious photo taken long ago. In the breathtaking, Salut les Cubains (1963), Varda sequences a series of pictures shot during a trip to Castro’s Cuba, including a thrilling Chris Marker-esque moment when a singer’s performance suddenly comes to life before our eyes. In Ydessa, the Bears and etc. (2004), the filmmaker interviews a photographer whose work feature people with teddy bears.

“A masterful collection of cinematic essays, Agnes Varda’s triptych of short films takes its audience from elation to despair and back again.”
– Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News
