Lonely Are the Brave

1962 • dir David Miller w/Kirk Douglas, Gena Rowlands, Walter Matthau, George Kennedy • 107 min • DCP

We pay tribute to Kirk Douglas – one of the last movie stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood who passed away this month – with three of our favorites of his films.

This fantastic and underseen film features Douglas as Jack Burns, an itinerant ranch hand who lives in the tradition of the cowboys of the Old West. Jack’s rejection of rules and regulations puts him in constant conflict with the modern world and, when he runs afoul of the law, he launches a desperate attempt to escape to Mexico.

“There is no greater western, and certainly no more tragic one.”
– Director Alex Cox, writing for The New York Times
