Virtual Screening: Roar

Featuring intro and virtual Q&A with John Marshall, the director’s son and co-star of the movie!

1981 • dir Noel Marshall w/Noel Marshall, Tippi Hedron, Melanie Griffith, John Marshall • 102 min

An unprecedented – and wholly unpredictable – action-adventure, ROAR follows wildlife preservationist Hank (The Exorcist producer Noel Marshall in his sole turn as an actor and director), who lives harmoniously alongside a menagerie of over 100 untamed animals, including cheetahs, elephants, lions and tigers on a preservation in the African plains. When his wife and children arrive (real-life wife Tippi Hedren, The Birds, and step-daughter Melanie Griffith, Working Girl) for a visit, a long-brewing battle for dominance between the lions erupts and threatens their very lives.

“As a portrait of recklessness and beastly terror, it’s Citizen Kane.”

“Like watching a live-action Lion King as Mufasa holds a switchblade to your throat.”

“It’s like Walt Disney went insane and shot a snuff version of Swiss Family Robinson.”

“I finally got to see Tippi Hedren’s real-life snuff movie starring her entire family that was made in 1981 but not released in the US until 2015. Watch, slack-jawed, as Tippi is scalped and her daughter Melanie Griffith mauled by the wild-animal extras who turn out to be the real stars of this nutcase action film.”
