On Friday, July 3rd at 9:00pm EDT, we will be screening a replay of “Mystery Of Chessboxing” followed by a replay of “Shaolin vs. Wu Tang” at 10:45pm EDT on RZA—acclaimed rapper, producer, director and co-founder of 36 Chambers—and Dan Halsted—head programmer at the Hollywood Theatre—will provide commentary during this special presentation. Their collective knowledge and personal stories related to “Mystery Of Chessboxing” & “Shaolin vs. Wu Tang” will give viewers a deeper appreciation for the movies we love.

“Mystery Of Chessboxing” is an instrumental piece of Wu-Tang lore. The old school Kung Fu movie follows Ah Pao on his journey to learn Kung Fu so he can avenge his father’s death. The film is directed by Taiwanese film director Joseph Kuo, who also helmed “7 Grandmasters,” “36 Deadly Styles,” and “18 Bronzemen.”

Wu-Tang Clan fans will immediately recognize that the track “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’” pays homage to the movie. Ghostface Killah also derived his name from the antagonist of the film.

“Shaolin vs Wu Tang” is the film that inspired the name Wu-Tang clan.

Doors open at 8:00pm EDT with the movie starting at 9:00pm EDT. Customers will receive a link to the live stream 1 hour prior to showtime. “Mystery Of Chessboxing” has a runtime of 90 minutes. Shaolin vs. Wu Tang has a runtime of 90 minutes.

If demand matches our prior showing, we will cut off sales prior to showtime to ensure ticket purchasers have the best streaming experience possible. We are still in the process of scaling our technology and can only handle a certain number of users.

About The Movies

THE MYSTERY OF CHESS BOXING (1979): The original Ghostface Killer is on the loose! A vicious villain with an unstoppable five element technique, Ghostface is killing off all his old rivals. Meanwhile, a young student tries to learn kung fu and is taken under the wing of an old chess master. The basics of chess prove to be the same as the basics of fighting, and eventually, the heroes will have to fight Ghostface Killer, who verbally insults his opponents as he annihilates them. A true classic, directed by Joseph Kuo.

Special thanks to The Hollywood Theatre. Bringing this film to 36 Cinema would not have been possible without their help.

SHAOLIN VS WU TANG (1983) (sometimes referred to as Shaolin and Wu Tang) is a 1983 martial arts film directed by and starring Gordon Liu. Not only is the intro from Wu-Tang Clan’s track “Bring Da Ruckus” sampled from this movie, but RZA pulled the name Wu-Tang Clan from this movie! Even though this movie has had a great impact on hip hop culture, very few people have seen it. We’re fortunate to link with The Hollywood Theatre’s Dan Halsted on this project; he has what is believed to be the only 35mm print of “Shaolin vs Wu Tang.”
