Backwards & in High Heels: A Tribute to Ginger Rogers

Sunday, December 25–Friday, December 30, 2011

We take the title of this series celebrating the 100th birthday of Ginger Rogers from one of the most famous – and telling – quotes about her. Referring to the fact that her much lauded co-star Fred Astaire had gotten all the credit, cartoonist Bob Thaves once wrote: “Sure [Astaire] was great, but don’t forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did, backwards… and in high heels.” The quote has been widely appropriated by anyone trying to point out the unequal recognition of the role of women in history but the truth is that even this quote does Rogers somewhat of an injustice. In fact, Rogers had a sparkling career away from the shadow of Astaire – from small roles in the Busby Berkeley musicals like 42ND STREET to easy-going drama like STAGE DOOR to her sparkling comedic roles in films like MONKEY BUSINESS where she holds her own against Cary Grant and Marilyn Monroe. This brief series features all of those films as well as a quartet of her amazing work with Astaire. So come down to the Brattle and reassess the talents of one of the best dancers – and most charming actresses – that cinema has ever known.
