Inspired by last year’s release of Paul Thomas Anderson’s INHERENT VICE, we present a small selection of films that drag the typically dark and shadowy film noir genre kicking and screaming into the sunlight. In a Sunshine Noir, the sky may be clear and the breeze might be warm but that’s not going to make it any easier for the private eyes, femme fatales, confidence men, wastrels, killers, schemers, and no-account drifters who populate these films. From classics of neo-noir like CHINATOWN and THE LONG GOODBYE to more unconventional fare like REPO MAN and THE BIG LEBOWSKI, these films all share a bright picture that can’t cover up the dark dealings going on.
