An Extravagant Entrepreneur: A Tribute to Cyrus Harvey Jr.

Wednesday, April 27 – Thursday, May 5, 2011

Cy HarveyWe were saddened to hear that Cyrus Harvey Jr, one of the founders of both the Brattle Theatre and Janus Films, had passed away earlier this month. In 2006, we were thrilled to honor Mr. Harvey at our first ever Brattle Gala and, Brattle creative director Ned Hinkle says, “for me, meeting him was like finding a long-lost spiritual grandfather.” In response to the news, we shifted into high programming gear and put together a brief, impromptu tribute to the legacy of Cy Harvey Jr. and his indelible impact on cinema.

Beginning on Wednesday, April 27 and continuing until Thursday, May 5, the Brattle pays cinematic tribute to Harvey by screening just a few of the films that he helped introduce to American audiences. It is fitting that these films bookend the 2011 Independent Film Festival of Boston’s screenings at the Brattle because, while it is easy to see now that Bergman, Truffaut, Fellini and Kurosawa are titanic film talents, at the time that Mr. Harvey was discovering them, they were merely emerging artists – just like many of the filmmakers whose work will appear in the festival.
