Painting the Frame: The Cinematography of Roger Deakins
Tuesday, February 27 – Thursday, March 8, 2018
One of the most Oscar nominated cinematographers of all time with 14 nods, Roger Deakins has also never actually won an Academy Award – perhaps until this year. As we wait to find out whether he will take home the statue for BLADE RUNNER 2049, we’ve put together this brief survey of Deakins’ work behind the camera. Starting out in documentary and music videos, Deakins worked on some of the most idiosyncratic British films of the mid-1980s including Michael Radford’s 1984, Ray Davies’ Return to Waterloo, and Alex Cox’s SID AND NANCY. In 1991, on Barton Fink, he began a long and fruitful collaboration with the Coen Brothers, shooting all of their subsequent features (with the exception of Burn After Reading). His remarkable work has also seen multi-film runs with Denis Villeneuve, Norman Jewison, and Sam Mendes as well as contributions to the films of Martin Scorsese (KUNDUN), Agnieszka Holland (THE SECRET GARDEN), John Sayles (PASSION FISH), David Mamet, Frank Darabont, Wayne Wang, Ron Howard, Angelina Jolie, and Andrew Dominik (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES). Please join us for this look at a remarkable cinematic talent – with many of the films presented on 35mm!
