Virtual Program Highlights:
2018 marks the 75th anniversary of Akira Kurosawa as a feature film director. His first full-length film, Sanshiro Sugata, was completed in 1943 and, while that films is currently unavailable in a high-quality format, we are still taking the opportunity to celebrate this master of world cinema. For this program, we focus on the period-piece films that Kurosawa created during his “golden age” while working for the legendary Toho Studios. This includes most of his famous samurai action pictures but it also features a Gorky adaptation (THE LOWER DEPTHS), the tale of an arrogant doctor (RED BEARD), and one of the director’s most influential films (RASHOMON). Please join us for this special series presented entirely on 35mm film!
