The Story of Film: An Odyssey

Mondays & Tuesdays, July 9 – August 28

Mark Cousins’ remarkable 15 part series about the history of film is a major achievement. Cousins’ focus on innovation drives the series’ viewpoint to encompass an amazingly global and diverse view of cinema history. Of course it has its fair share of Hollywood, and its “bauble” as he calls it, but it also seeks out cinematic innovators in all corners of the globe. THE STORY OF FILM features interviews with film luminaries from Stanley Donen to Samira Makhmalbaf to Woo-ping Yuen to Amitabh Bachchan to Lars von Trier. Cousins also demonstrates the techniques of filmmaking that he discusses in sometimes delightfully subtle ways within his own film. At times, Cousins’ opinions can become a little idiosyncratic, but his approach to the material is remarkably inclusive, well-rounded, and enthralling. In addition, the Brattle will present a selection of the key films discussed by Cousins in each episode. Oh, and don’t worry if you can’t catch every week, pick your favorite decade and come explore THE STORY OF FILM along with us. We’ll also be providing guides at the screenings that will direct you to all of the films featured in each episode. See below for full schedule.
