Based on the novel by Jorge Amado, this Brazilian sex comedy follows the strange events that befall Doña Flor (a magnetic Sonia Braga in her breakout role) after she is left a widow by the death of her philandering, cruel, and irresponsible husband. Attempting to marry more wisely the second time around, Doña Flor weds a gentlemanly, but boring, pharmacist who has little flair in the bedroom. When she finds her new sex life is less than satisfying, Doña Flor is visited by the wanton spirit of her late husband who finally seems to be (mostly) under her control. When initially released, Dona Flor became the most successful film in Brazilian history – outgrossing Jaws and setting a record not broken for over 30 years. Internationally, Dona Flor received nominations for a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award. – Adapted from notes by Film Movement
