2019 • dir Patricio Guzmán • 84 min

Patricio Guzman’s THE CORDILLERA OF DREAMS is the third and final entry in the great documentarian’s ongoing examination into the history, landscape, and spirit of his native Chile. Rarely has a filmmaker revealed such a complex and compelling portrait of a nation, Guzman’s grasp of both landscape and storytelling leads us on a fascinating journey along the ‘spine’ of Chile – the Andes Mountains. As usual, Guzman dwells as much on the often tragic history of the country (and its troubled present) as he does on its majestic beauty and he refracts it all through a personal lens. Winner of the Best Documentary award at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

“Guzmán’s late-career trinity is a stunning achievement in the cinema of the hidden pattern and the startling, unexpected connection.”
– Jessica Kiang, Variety

“Deeply personal. In this poetic documentary, Patricio Guzmán mediates on the past and future of his home country via the mountains that close it off from the rest of the world.”
– Jonathan Romney, Sight & Sound

Though it is not necessary to have seen them to find this film rewarding, the previous two chapters in Guzman’s “landscape and memory” series – Nostalgia for the Light (2010) and The Pearl Button (2015) – are available for rent online.
