At times hilarious, at times poignant, this wonderful film with echoes of Lucrecia Martel’s La Ciénaga follows the charming, devious Madá as she navigates the unruly waters of Brazil’s current socio-political climate. Madá is the longstanding housekeeper for a nouveau riche family’s summer home but she is always scheming, looking for ways to better herself – with or without the aid and knowledge of her bosses. The film takes place over the course of three summers during which the fortunes of the family drastically change when their shady business dealings are exposed. Madá finds her survival skills challenged by the turmoil facing her employers yet, despite these difficulties, she is cheerfully, bullishly optimistic. She is accustomed to making things work for herself, and those loyal to her, no matter the odds.
Lead actress Regina Casé is sensational in the role of Madá. She is able to take the abrasive qualities that could make the character grating in another context and make them endearing. The chaos that swirls around her, whether in the form of over-the-top parties or a full-on police raid, is no match for Madá’s determination and positivity.
